Abstract

Purpose: While wearing RGP contact lenses, it is necessary to understand their forces acting on the hard contact lens fitted on the cornea. Lens movement accompanied by blinking is very important in the respect of oxygen supply to the
cornea as well as correction of visual acuity.
Methods: Contact lens displacement is relevant with blinking such as the pressure where the eyelid presses the lens, sliding friction between the internal eyelid and contact lens, blinking time, maximum vertical distance between upper and lower eyelids etc. Therefore, displacement after blinking is like to have a functional relation with them.
Results: We proposed a mathematical model and its numerical solution program to explain an eyelid movement concerning with a sliding friction between eyelid and contact lens, to predict a displacement of contact lens after blinking by contact lens diameter, blinking time, eyelid pressure etc. or to occur a problem while wearing contact lenses.
Conslusions: We confirmed its validity because it shows a good agreement with former clinical studies using blinking velocity and eyelid thickness which can be measured.
